Unless a significant amount is spent on a high quality slate the thicknesses will vary greatly and nobody likes wobbly furniture.
3) Porcelains have come a long way and there are many out there that are a nice substitute for the real thing. The tile will wear better. Possibly cost less. Definitely will be more likely to get a better, even installation and cost less to install.
