Selecting The Right Roofing Material For Your Home

Selecting The Right Roofing Material For Your Home.

If you are in the market to replace your roof, choosing the right materials can make all the difference. If you have a basic idea of the various materials that are available, this choice can become a bit easier to make. This article will discuss several of the different types of roofing material available, with some basic pros and cons of each.

Asphalt shingles – the most common roofing material. Asphalt shingles are used regularly in homes all across the country. They are typically the most inexpensive of materials to use on a roof, with a higher premium being paid for the architectural designs. These shingles are usually easy to install, but they might not hold up as well against hail. The selection of colors is also minimal if you choose asphalt shingles.  You can choose from a 20 year shingle to a 50 year shingle with the most common for most homes are the 30 and 40 year shingles.

Wood shingles – a classic. Wood shingles have been around for a very long time. They are more difficult to install, so hiring a reputable contractor is important. Wood shingles add a lovely design element to any home, but they are not fireproof. They can help to keep your home cooler during the hot months of summer, but be aware that rotting and decay will likely occur over time.

Clay and Concrete Tiles – made to last a lifetime. Clay or concrete roofs are quite durable, and probably will not need to be replaced nearly as often as asphalt roofs will. They are very heavy by nature of the material they are made of; and so, require a special type of roofing structure that can withstand the weight. This type of roofing material is energy efficient and fireproof, but you will pay a premium to purchase these shingles.

Steel or metal-This is what I have chosen for my personal home.  Steel comes in many different forms.  I chose the steel shake shingles which look like wood shakes but there are many other styles.

Purchasing a new roof is a big decision for any homeowner to make. Choosing the right materials for your new roof can make all the difference, as far as both durability and design. Take some time to explore the many roofing materials that are available by starting with the advice in this article, and you’re sure to make a selection that works well for many years to come.  Selecting the right roofing material can add value to any home.

Happy Trails,

Donnie
